We have cared for Coquitlam kids for over 16 years, and a lot of those kids come from the Burquitlam and Coquitlam West corridor that runs along Como Lake Avenue and the North Road and Clarke Road spine. It is a neighbourhood of roughly 20,000 people across about 1,400 acres, with the city planning for another 15,000 residents over 20 years along the SkyTrain corridor.

Where We Are Compared to Como Lake

Como Lake sits in west Coquitlam at roughly 49 degrees 15 minutes 37 seconds north, 122 degrees 51 minutes 30 seconds west, at 122 metres elevation. Our daycare is east of the lake, at 3007 Pasture Cir in the Oxford Heights pocket between Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam. To be clear, we are not inside the Como Lake neighbourhood itself. We serve families who live around Como Lake and drive east to us.

The natural route out of the Como Lake area is east on Como Lake Avenue to Mariner Way and Lougheed Highway, then into the Oxford Heights streets to Pasture Cir. There are no tricky highway ramps and no awkward turns. Once you have done it a few times, it is muscle memory.

The Como Lake Neighbourhood at a Glance

Como Lake Park at 700 Gatensbury Street is one block off Como Lake Avenue, and it is the green anchor for families in Burquitlam and Coquitlam West. The park has a 1 km lakeside loop trail, two floating docks, a playground, picnic amenities, lakeside benches, public washrooms, and a Little Library. It is easy with a stroller, easy with a toddler who wants to run, and easy for grandparents joining a Saturday morning walk.

The lake itself is small and mellow. Average depth about 2 metres, maximum 4 metres, and it is stocked with catchable rainbow trout every year by the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery. Festival Coquitlam runs a free Como Lake Fish Derby each May for kids under 17. It is one of those small local traditions that gives the neighbourhood its character, and the kind of thing families near the lake plan their spring around.

Como Lake is the headwater of the Como Creek watershed, so the park doubles as urban wildlife habitat. Waterfowl and songbirds live here year-round, and Coquitlam parks staff ask visitors not to feed the geese. The three neighbourhood parks families rotate through are Miller Park, Como Lake Park, and Blue Mountain Park. Access to Como Lake Park is by car from Gatensbury Street off either Como Lake Avenue or Austin Road, with parking at the north and south ends of the lake.

For everyday errands, families here rely on Como Lake Village at 1960 Como Lake Avenue. It has been the neighbourhood shopping hub for more than 50 years, anchored by No Frills and Shoppers Drug Mart, with a Starbucks, banks, and a veterinary hospital in the mix. Pediatric appointments, groceries, and a coffee run can all happen inside one small parking lot, which matters when you have a car seat to unbuckle every time.

Getting To and From Work: SkyTrain and Buses

The Burquitlam and Coquitlam West corridor is a transit neighbourhood. The Millennium Line SkyTrain runs about 1.5 km from the Como Lake Avenue and Blue Mountain Street corner, and Burquitlam Station is roughly a 21-minute walk from that intersection. TransLink bus routes 156, 151, and 157 serve the area, so a lot of parents combine a bus leg with the SkyTrain into Vancouver or Burnaby.

The commute pattern for our Como Lake families is usually: drive east to us, drop off at 7:30 am, drive back to Burquitlam Station, and take the Millennium Line downtown. It works because the drive east from Como Lake to Oxford Heights on Como Lake Avenue is short, and our doors open early enough to catch a rush-hour SkyTrain.

Schools Kids Around Como Lake Feed Into

School catchment is a real factor when you pick a daycare, because you want your child ready for the elementary they will actually attend. Feeder elementary schools in the Burquitlam and Coquitlam West catchment around Como Lake include Roy Stibbs, Mountainview, Lord Baden-Powell, and Miller Park. Como Lake Middle School sits at 1121 King Albert Avenue, walking distance from the lake. Centennial Secondary is the catchment high school for a large stretch of this corridor.
